On a moonless night in the woods of upstate New York, Zana Briski stretched a piece of photographic paper alongside a place she knew nocturnal creatures often passed. Then she waited in the darkness until a black bear strolled by. At the moment it passed between Briski and her photographic paper, she triggered an electronic flash—so instantaneous that the bear hardly noticed but powerful enough to record its shadow on the photographic paper. Once the bear had continued on its way, Briski rolled the paper inside a light-tight tube and took it back to her studio to develop.
