The graphic designer Paul Rand once wrote, “Good design adds value of some kind, gives meaning, and, not incidentally, can be sheer pleasure to behold.” Rand produced good design for six decades, creating magazine layouts, posters, book covers, and branding for many corporate identities. In the early 1950s, Rand commissioned the work of the famed Surrealist Man Ray for the packaging of El Producto Cigars. Rand recognized that Man Ray’s art lent an air of avant-garde sophistication to the company’s product.
