Matto’s first known wooden construction, this work adheres to
the orthogonal grid yet destabilizes its rigid structure to create the outline
of a horse or llama. Drawing on images from Andean weavings, Matto combines key
principles of Constructivism (the grid) with Pre-Columbian art motifs (the
llama), a practice that defined his artistic career and is also present in his Totem series in this gallery. Construcción also highlights Matto’s
interest in the properties of unrefined wood.
