On the day the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki—August 9, 1945—Kimiko Takaki, mother of artist Michael Koerner, was 45 miles away in Sasebo, Japan, but the exposure would shadow her life and that of her future family. Genetic abnormalities at birth and cancers ended the lives of Michael’s four brothers, and his mother eventually succumbed to a rare disease. In his series Coronae / DNA, Koerner uses the chemicals of the wet collodion process to create visual references to his family’s genetic legacy, flinging, blowing, and streaking chemicals across the metal surface.
