Object Type
DescriptionFélix Teynard, a civil engineer from Grenoble with no artistic training and little technical experience, set off for Egypt in 1852 and returned a year later with 160 astonishing images of its landscape and ancient monuments. His mastery of the medium is startling, for he worked in an age when photographers had to mix their own chemicals, sensitize their own negatives and printing papers, and rely on trial and error to adjust their darkroom recipes and exposures to specific conditions of light and climate—a particular problem in the extreme sun and heat of Egypt.
Provenance[Robert Hershkowitz Limited, Sussex, England]; purchased by MFAH, 2019.
