Description

This dramatic mountain landscape with an entrancing sense of atmospheric perspective is the work of John Stewart, who was likely encouraged to try his hand at the new medium of photography by his brother-in-law, the eminent scientist and photographic pioneer Sir John Herschel. Stewart settled in the popular French resort town of Pau in 1847 and opened a photography studio. Views of the dramatic landscape of the Pyrenees constituted the majority of his known works. This image, richly printed by the French printer and publisher Louis-Désiré Blanquart-Evrard, appeared in the latter’s 1853 publication Souvenirs des Pyrénees.
