DescriptionDrawing from the deep well
of art history, photographer John Edmonds photographed his friend Milton in a
pose that recalls countless portraits by Man Ray, Lotte Jacobi, Edward Weston
and others. Unlike those photographic precedents featuring a white female
model, a black male figure is presented with beauty and allure. Harnessing
natural light, Edmonds utilizes the camera as an instrument of nuance rather
than overt politics. His work explores the humanity and the potent sense of
intimacy that is cultivated in the best portraits.

ProvenanceThe artist, New York; [ltd los angeles, Los Angeles]; purchased by MFAH, 2018.
