DescriptionFrancis William Edmonds began a career in banking in New York City before seriously pursuing artistic training in the late 1820s. He became involved with several artists’ associations there, and his connections to the financial world helped bring artists and patrons together. The subjects of most of Edmonds’s paintings derive from American life. The majority represent domestic interiors as the setting for dramas of everyday middle-class existence. His images generally display the optimistic good cheer that Americans of this period preferred, and many include humorous touches.
ProvenanceThe artist; by descent, his daughter Nora H. Edmonds; her daughter Cecil Coudert; her son, Paul Begelow; [Kennedy Galleries, New York]; purchased by MFAH, 1998.
