ProvenanceHenri (1917-1982) and Suzanne (1917-1988) Paradis, Saint-Étienne (Lugt 4361) (1); [sale, London, Sotheby’s, “Old Master & British Drawings & Watercolours,” 5 July, 2017, lot 8 (as Francesco Morandini, called Il Poppi); [W.M Brady & Co.], by 2017; purchased by MFAH 2018

(1) Originally from Saint-Etienne and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the architect Henri Paradis was the architect of the Saint-Pierre church in Saint-Etienne. With his wife, he began collecting around 1967 and amassed several hundred drawings, paintings, and sculpture. He believed that it was their mission preserve the knowledge of the great masters of art. Drawings from their collection include examples from the French and Italian schools with a lesser extent from the Northern Schools of the 17th-19th centuries. They had many drawings after Roman paintings and monuments with some coming from the portfolios of art historians such as Gustave Soulier and Hugeus Imbert, while others were acquired in France or on trips to Italy and Switzerland. On the front of almost every sheet appears their collector’s mark consisting of their initials and a heart, accompanied by a number in pen and brown ink. The Collector’s mark is on the lower right corner of the sheet along with an old inventory number and another number (crossed-out) is in the top left corner (See Figs. 15, 16, 17)
