Description

Taking the form of ubiquitous color wheels used in arts education settings, Jason Salavon’s Wheel is made up not of various gradations of pure color but rather hundreds of images culled from the internet through the search engine Bing. Salavon tediously searched for individual hues before stitching together the images into a massive montage. The individual frames range from banal pictures of flowers to pop-culture imagery to racier images of pornography. The resulting “color wheel” not only serves as a means of visualizing data but also reveals the underlying complexity of associations between images and color in our digital age.

ProvenanceThe artist; [Inman Gallery, Houston]; purchased by MFAH, 2018.
