Following a call to action by Donald Trump in the final days of his presidency, a mob of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol building on January 6, 2021, disrupting the joint session of Congress assembled to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s victory. Video and photos of the attack flooded the media. Once the violence and destruction had subsided, Jason Andrew photographed the aftermath, including the damaged sculptures and monuments in the Capitol Rotunda. Here he photographs the defaced bust of Zachary Taylor, whose presidency was characterized by partisan conflict and threats to the stability of the Union—issues that have continued to foster a history of violence in the United States.
