DescriptionThroughout the colonial period, Chinese manufacturers made porcelain specifically designed for Western markets, but it was not until after independence that the United States traded directly with China, and they did so beginning in 1785 as the ship Empress of China returned with its cargo. Americans responded enthusiastically as goods like this garniture set became more readily available.
Provenance[David Stockwell, (1907–1996), Wilmington, Delaware]; purchased by Miss Ima Hogg; given to MFAH, 1969.
