This stunning view of the snow-capped Himalayas is the
kind of picture that seduced European audiences eager to see images of exotic India.
Its deep perspective layers mountains, a band of clouds, foggy hills, and the
cultivated land below, giving equal attention to the otherworldly landscape and
its settlement by a foreign ruling class. Majestic estates sit in the lush
foothills of Darjeeling, a town famous for its tea plantations and a popular
summer resort for the British elite during the Raj. The backdrop is Mount Kangchenjunga,
one of the world’s highest peaks.
