was not a portraitist. He never photographed friends or family—not even his
common-law wife of four decades, Valentine—and he generally preferred to
photograph at times of day when the streets of Paris would be empty. However,
in the spring of 1921, at the urging of his friend the illustrator André
Dignimont for a possible publication called La
Femme criminelle, Atget made a dozen photographs of prostitutes, such as
these two women standing at attention before the unmarked entrance of their
establishment.
