Description

Victoria Sambunaris has crisscrossed the United States with a large-format view camera for more than a decade, including nearly five years in South Texas photographing the intersection of geology, industry, and culture within the petrochemical and shipping industries around the Gulf Coast. Throughout regions of extreme physical and cultural diversity, fluctuating between dense urban sprawl and remote uncultivated desert, Sambunaris’s photographs express her curiosity about humankind’s exploration of and intrusion upon nature. With the beauty of a Dutch landscape, this photograph speaks to the mystery and unease of a country where human intervention and natural beauty inspire wonder in equal measure.
