ProvenanceOn the Frick Reference Library photograph, the work is entitled ‘A Landscape: Sun and Shower’, dated 1825, and stated as having been in the collection of Miss Isabel and Miss Elizabeth Constable. It is also stated that it was in the Ashmead Bartlet Sale at Christie’s – but, since this was in 1922, it conflicts with the chronology of the Bulkeley Smith sale and subsequent ownership by W. R. Timken referenced below.

Frank Bulkeley Smith Collection Sale, Plaza Hotel, New York, April 22-23, 1920, Lot 84, ‘A Landscape: Sun and Shower, 1825’, sold to W. R. Timken, $220.

Bought from the Timken Collection through Parke-Bernet by Mrs Robert Cummins Stuart III (Rosa Allen), later Mrs Thomas Walter Williams (grandmother of Francita Stuart Ulmer), ca. 1927.

Bequeathed to Francita Stuart October 1955 and in her ownership since then.
