DescriptionIn his mature work, Strand photographed with the aim of producing collective portraits of places—the Hebrides, New England, Ghana, Northern Italy—in book form. This image of a black-clad sailor wearing a classic Breton sailor cap was made in the town of Douarnenez, located at the northwest tip of France’s Brittany peninsula and was included in his 1952 book La France de Profil.
