DescriptionBancroft Woodcock (1732–1817), Delaware’s foremost 18th-century silversmith, established his business in Wilmington in 1754 and would remain there until the early 1790s when he moved to Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He had trained two family members, his son and nephew. As was the case with many Wilmington craftsmen, all three men were Quakers. Their work reflected the tastes of their Quaker clientele, which was an adherence to simple, plain forms. Woodcock produced various forms in the rococo and neoclassical idioms, including tea services, salvers, cans, ladles, and flatware.
