DescriptionAt the 1971 Paris Biennale, Takuma Nakahira offered his own novel response to the landscape that he previously had confronted in For a Language to Come, one that would characterize his criticism and photography thereafter. Nakahira’s process-based installation for the biennale, titled Circulation: Date, Place, Events, mounted an assault on the myriad forms of mediation that inundate the urban experience. For this installation, Nakahira photographed, printed, and displayed a vast number of images documenting his daily experiences in Paris, adding more each day and overflowing the allotted exhibition space. Circulation conveyed the pathways of circulation that he encountered in Paris: streets, traffic, print media, television screens, art installations, signs, teletype news feeds, subways, and people. As the photographic remnant of circulating things, bodies, and information, the all-encompassing installation collapsed the boundary between spectacle and spectator.
