A founder of the short-lived but extremely influential photography journal Provoke, Nakahira Takuma’s photographs exemplify the are-bure-boke (which translates to grainy, blurry, and out-of-focus) style that was a hallmark of Provoke. His disquieting scenes of everyday urban life, often tilted and shot toward a light source, capture Nakahira’s experiences in a country suspended between construction and destruction due to the expansion and remaking of postwar Japan.
