Description

A. C. Crawford established his business in Galveston, Texas, in 1838; in 1871 the name of the firm was listed as A. C. Crawford and Sons. Their store was located on the busy Strand commercial avenue.

The jar was probably made in western Pennsylvania, where a stoneware pottery industry developed during the 19th century. From there, cobalt-stenciled jars with merchants’ labels were widely distributed.
