DescriptionBased on a painting of 1853–54, Stump Speaking presents a distinct moment in the American political process—a candidate’s direct appeal to the voters—at a time when the Whig and Democratic parties were at the center of American politics. Whigs tended to oppose Jacksonian Democratic policies and supported a governmental role in national financial policy; the party disintegrated after the middle of the century over disagreements concerning the spread of slavery into the territories.
