Bruce Davidson produced one of the most significant bodies of photographs documenting the Civil Rights movement between 1962 and 1965. In his follow-up project, East 100th Street, Davidson spent two years photographing the residents of one block in Harlem in New York. The project was supported by the first photography grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Despite being an outsider, Davidson worked with his subjects to gain their trust, in turn making intimate photographs that depict not only the challenging socioeconomic conditions of the neighborhood, but also affirming moments of familial affection and community support.
