Jessica Mallios embraces ambiguity and abstraction in her photography. Although the works in her series Disassociate are primarily studies of sculptural and architectural structures, Mallios’s use of atypical perspectives, lighting, and framing techniques strain the relationship between viewer and subject. By rendering subjects illegible—but still visible—Mallios emphasizes the detachment of photography from the environments and structures it depicts. Her work fosters a sense of unease and disorientation as the viewer is left to make sense of images void of clearly identifiable subjects or symbols.
