DescriptionThe design and construction of this diminutive joint stool relate it to approximately a dozen other examples which are ascribed to 18th-century Rhode Island woodworkers. Research comparing furniture components and architectural work has fostered the identification of this sophisticated regional school. The tables and joint stools that constitute this group are consistently fashioned of maple and probably date between 1710 and 1740. While this joint stool is clearly related, variations in the articulation of its turnings elements set it apart as the work of yet another artisan working within this local tradition.
