The Mingjung (People’s) Cultural Movement of the 1980s revived many
long-suppressed Korean cultural traditions, including the Hahoe Mask Drama. A
festival now stages re-enactments of these ancient folk dramas using
900-year-old masks that express the emotions, ideas, and agonies of their time.
Commenting on the relevance of the festival today, photographer Monica Cheon
said, “Nine hundred years is a long time, but it may not be long enough to
change the real nature of human beings.”
