In his series The Text Book, Suk Kuhn Oh explores the
power of childhood memories. Playing off the storybook characters Chulsoo and
Yonghee (the Korean equivalents of “Dick and Jane” or “Jack and Jill”), Oh
turns his friends into life-sized puppets who wear masks of Chulsoo and
Yonghee. He then asks them to reenact painful, embarrassing, or bizarre
childhood memories, with the hope that these photographs will rob the memory of
its emotional power over the present.
