Published References References: 1. Though this miniature is not inscribed, the identification of Ajmat Dev can be made as suggested by Cathy Benkaim, by comparing three portraits of him published by W. G. Archer in Indian Paintings from the Punjab Hills: A Survey and History of Pahari Miniature Painting, 1973, vol. I, pp. 378 and 379, nos. 33 and 34 and p. 380, no. 38; vol. II, pp. 294 and 295, figs. 33 and 34, and p. 298, fig. 38. Nos. 34 and 38 are inscribed portraits of him in the Mankot Raj Collection, Chandigarh Museum, while no. 33 is in the Archer Collection, London. In nos. 33 and 34, Ajmat Dev has the same features with the inclined line of nose and forehead, and wears the same style of turban and moustache and beard arrangement. The miniature would probably have been painted in Jammu and not Mankot, with the paler softer Jammu palette and the chubby Bandralta type facial features of the attendants. 2. Compare a Jammu portrait of Raja Ugar Singh of Chamba leaning against a similar cushion in Archer, 1973, vol. II p. 135, fig. 10.
