DescriptionVivienne in the green dress, NYC is a portrait of the filmmaker Vivienne Dick, with whom Goldin collaborated on a number of projects: “I met Vivienne the week I moved to New York—we’ve been friends for thirty years, and she is probably my biggest inspiration,” Goldin has recalled.  “It was seamless—from our lives to her film.  What had an enormous effect on me was the subjective editing, and the remarkable soundtracks of her super-8 films had an enormous impact on my slideshows.”

New York became Goldin’s home in 1978.  Working and living in a loft on the Bowery, Goldin became associated with the punk movement that flourished at such venues as CBGB and the Mudd Club, and her photographs of these years capture the after-hours mood of the downtown scene.  Many of these photographs, including Vivienne in the green dress, NYC were later incorporated into other projects, including The Ballad of Sexual Dependency.
