signature work and one of the key monuments of 1980s art, The Ballad of
Sexual Dependency tracks the artist’s life in the subcultures of the music
and art scene of the late 1970s and 1980s, the post-Stonewall gay world and
AIDS crisis, and the drug culture sometimes referred to as “heroin chic.” It is
fitting that her images from that work—direct reflections of her life and
experience—often include mirrors. Goldin’s photographic oeuvre has been highly
influential, giving birth to a diaristic and confessional strain of photography
that has been widely embraced by contemporary photographers.
