In 1950 the photographer Bill Brandt switched subjects, moving from landscapes to nudes. Yet, he maintained many of the techniques and equipment utilized for broad visions of the land, applying them to the human form. Placing his camera very close to his subjects, and using a wide-angle lens, Brandt enlarged the foreground of his images, distorting parts of the body. In the darkroom, he experimented with contrast, giving his nudes a surreal quality and subverting the history of the nude in art, which had long privileged proportion, natural beauty, and symmetry.
