DescriptionDespite the bright, candy-colors of the houses that dominate Hans-Christian Schink’s Rötha, the scene is rather stark and somber. The miniscule patches of landscape dotting each property in this German town contain only a handful of plants, each in various stages of wilting. Many of the homeowners have eschewed simple grass, preferring the easyto-maintain, lifeless, brown mulch. Though sprinkled with personalized touches—lawn ornaments and window boxes—on the whole, Schink’s scene suggests the weariness and dissatisfaction of such a regulated, compliant existence.
