Knoedler & Co., New York] [4]; Mr. And Mrs. Winifred Payne (née Wynne; 1914–New York, 2004) and Larry (New York, 1906–New York, 2001) Aldrich, New York, by 1958 [5]; [Galerie Daniel Malingue, Paris]; [Galerie H. [1] Odermatt lists “Mme Ralph Sanger” which was Virginia S. Osborn’s name until 1918 or 1920 at the latest. She married Sanger (1882–1918) in 1904 and after his death during World War I, she married Robert Gordon McKay (1877–1958) in 1920. Source: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/52475078/virginia_sturges_sanger_mckay (Accessed by Julia May Boddewyn, 17 December 2024). As Mrs. Robert McKay, she was the lender of the painting to the Gauguin show in San Francisco in 1936.

[2] Odermatt also lists Mme Robert McKay. See the above note.

[3] The Papers of the Paul Rosenberg Gallery included no mention of a sale of the work to Vogel. The Paul Rosenberg Archives, A Gift of Elaine and Alexandre Rosenberg, Museum of Modern Art Archives, New York.

[4] Knoedler’s involvement in this sale cannot be confirmed. Neither Vogel nor Aldrich was found to be listed in the stockbooks between 1928 and 1970. Knoedler Gallery Archive, Getty Research Institute.

[5] Their collection was exhibited beginning in January 1959.
