[1] Mme Ernest Rouart (1879-1966) was born Julie Manet, the daughter of the artists Berthe Morisot and Eugène Manet. Julie married Ernest Rouart (1874-1942), one of the five children of Henri Rouart (1833-1912)---an important collector and supporter of the Impressionist artists.
[2] The work was exhibited in Paris in the Summer of 1941 and loaned from an unidentified private collection. See “Berthe Morisot (1841-1895), Musée de l’Orangerie, Paris, Summer 1941, cat. no. 62 as “La ‘Hotte.’” The dates of the ownership of Gabriel Thomas are currently unknown.
[3] E. and A. Silberman Galleries, New York, was founded by Elkan (1892-1952) and Abris Silberman (1896-1968) in 1938.
[4] David M. Daniels (1927-2002) was an art collector and patron. He was a trustee of the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts and President of the Drawing Society. In addition to the present paintings, works from his collection are known to have been sold in London (1978) and in New York (1995, 2002).

[5] Daniels loans the present work from his collection to the 1957 exhibition as cited. See “Art Unites Nations: An Exhibition of Paintings,” E. and A. Silberman Galleries, New York, December 10-28, 1957, cat. no. 18 as “La Hotte, ill., lent by David Daniels, New York. The catalogue indicates E. and A. Silberman Galleries as a former owner. When the work is loaned to the 1960 exhibition at Wildenstein, New York, the earlier ownership of Gabriel Thomas is acknowledged. See “Loan Exhibition of Paintings, Berthe Morisot” Wildenstein, New York, November 3-December 10, 1960, cat. no. 40 (ill.) as “Fillettes au Jardin (La Hotte).”
[6] The printed buyers’ list for this 1965 sale notes Paul Kantor as the final bidder, likely executed on behalf of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Beck.
