Object Type
Drouot, Paris, “Collection Jules Strauss,” December 15, 1932, lot 55, illus.]; Thierry de La Noue, Paris until at least 1961 [3]; [possibly Galerie Schmit, Paris, prior to 1997] [4] [5]; Private collection, possibly by descent, at least before 2005 until possibly 2008 [6] [7] [8]; [Sotheby's, New York, “Impressionist and Modern Art,” May 3, 2006, lot 19, illus., bought in] [9]; [Christie’s, New York, Impressionist and Modern Art,” May 6, 2008, lot 45, likely bought in] [10]; [Hirschl & Adler, until January 4, 2012] [11]; J. Lanier and Marie Yeates, Houston; [Christie's, London, “Impressionist and Modern Art,” February 4, 2015, lot 30, bought in]; J. Lanier and Marie Yeates, Houston, until 2016; purchased by MFAH, 2016.
[1] Jos Hessel (or Joseph Hessel) art dealer and collector (1859-1942).
[2] The work was listed in the June 1928 exhibition catalogue cited as belonging to Jules Strauss. See cat. no. 139 as
“Portrait de femme,” p. 22.
[3] See Bataille, Marie-Louise and Georges Wildenstein. “Berthe Morisot: catalogue des peintures, pastels,
acquarelles. Paris: Les Beaux Arts, 1961, cat. no. 22 that references the work in the collection of Thiery de la Noue.
[4] The Galerie Schmit was established in 1964 at 396 rue Saint Honoré, Paris, by Robert Schmit (1920-2008).
[5] The Galerie Schmit, Paris, exhibits the work from 1969 to 2000 as cited; however, no lender is indicated, so it is
not known whether the work was still in private hands or owned by the gallery, as was suggested in the 1997
catalogue raisonné: See Clairet, Alain, Delphine Montalant and Yves Rouart in “Berthe Morisot (1841-1895):
catalogue raisonné de l’oeuvre peint,” (Montolivet: CERA-nrs, 1997), cat. no. 22, p. 123, where the Galerie Schmit
is recorded in the provenance of this work. From 1990 until 2000, the painting is identified in the noted exhibition
catalogues as “Portrait of Jeanne Marie.” No other indications of the ownership of this painting by the Galerie
Schmit are currently known.
[6] In the cited 2005 exhibition catalogue, the Galerie Schmit notes the ownership for the work has passed from the
collection of Thierry de la Noue to a private, unnamed collector.
[7] The ownership transfer from Thierry de La Noue to his descendant(s) is indicated in the cited 2006 sale at
Sotheby’s, New York, lot 19, lending credence to the possible role of the Galerie Schmit as exhibiting the work for
the noted period, but not owning it. To date, there is no additional information that documents the transfer of
ownership from Thierry de La Noue to his descendant(s).
[8] From 2005 until 2008, the work was twice offered for sale: in 2006 at Sotheby’s, New York, as noted, and in 2008
at Christie’s, New York, as noted, by an owner or owners, who currently remain unidentified.
[9] The work appeared in the cited 2006 sale at Sotheby’s, New York.
[10] A label for the 2008 sale at Christie’s, New York (lot 45) provides the only record that the work was offered at
auction. No published results for the present work were recorded, and it is thought to have been withdrawn or
bought-in.
[11] The verso of the work bears a Hirshchl & Adler label with the stock no. “HA 14150D.”
