Object Type
Provenance[Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939), Paris, until July 1912] [1] [2]; Comte Arnauld Doria, (1890-1977), Paris, July 1912 until 1967 [3]; [Galerie Philippe Reichenbach, Paris, 1967] [4]; purchased by Mr. and Mrs. John A. Beck, Houston, 1967; given to MFAH, 1998.

[1] Vollard inventory no. 5288 is cited with regard to this work in MFAH records (MFAH object file-accessed by Robert McD. Parker, April 2024.). The number is confirmed by a corresponding Valtat reference in the Vollard archives. [Base Vollard. Fonds d’Archives de la Galerie Ambroise Vollard, Paris, Documentation du Musée d’Orsay (MS 421 (4,13) for Valtat) consulted by Robert McD. Parker, October 2024.].

[2] Vollard’s sale to Comte Doria on 31 July 1912 is recorded in the Vollard archives and referenced with the no. 5288. [Base Vollard. Fonds d’Archives de la Galerie Ambroise Vollard, Paris, Documentation du Musée d’Orsay (MS 421, p. 59 for Valtat) consulted by Robert McD. Parker, October 2024.]. Earlier information provided in a bill of sale to Mr. John Beck from the Galerie Philippe Reichenbach dated September 8, 1967 incorrectly dated this transaction to 1910. (MFAH object file-accessed by Robert McD. Parker, April 2024.).

[3] Comte Doria, the son of Comte Armand Doria, appears in the list of Vollard’s clients as is identified with his given name and life dates. [See Base Vollard, Répertoires. Fonds d’Archives de la Galerie Ambroise Vollard, Paris, Documentation du Musée d’Orsay consulted by Robert McD. Parker, October 2024.] His father’s famous art collection (“Collection de M. le Comte Armand Doria”) was dispersed in two important sales in Paris at the Galerie Georges Petit in May 1899.

[4] The bill of sale dated September 8, 1967, cited above, also referenced the work’s prior owners, but additional information and corrections have been made to the provenance as recorded here. (MFAH object file-accessed by Robert McD. Parker, April 2024.).
