DescriptionEnglish-born Horatio Gates saw service with the British during the French and Indian War, and then returned to his home country. In 1772, he settled in Berkeley County, Virginia, purchasing a plantation there. At the outbreak of the Revolution, he became a brigadier general in the American forces and was soon promoted to major general. Gates is remembered for his victories over British forces led by major general John Burgoyne in the New York campaign of 1777, a turning point that brought France into the conflict on the American side. His later defeat at Camden, South Carolina, in 1780 left Gates in disgrace.
