DescriptionThe National Lancers, established in 1836, were an elite unit within the Massachusetts militia created largely for ceremonial functions that also served as a social organization for members. In nineteenth-century military strategy, lancers were fast-moving, first-wave attackers who charged the enemy followed by troops with weapons better suited to close combat. Their uniforms usually included a distinctive, flat-topped hat called a czapka, signifying the Polish derivation of most lancers’ uniforms.
