DescriptionIn 1672, John Dwight received a patent for the production of stoneware. By the beginning of the 1700s, the potteries in Nottingham became the most important for the production of English stoneware. This mug or gorge has a brown salt-glazed surface reminiscent of German pottery imports. It is noted for its remarkable thin body and pierced floral ornament. Moreover, it incorporates a visual surprise: the piercing gives the impression that the liquid contents would simply spill; however, a concealed interior wall contains the beverage.
