DescriptionPhilips Wouwerman was a versatile painter, but he usually specialized in images featuring horses in landscape settings. His cavalry and battle scenes were especially prized by 18th-century collectors. The horrors of war had been a common subject in Northern European art since the beginning of the 16th century. In this painting, Wouwerman focuses on the merciless treatment of civilians by marauding soldiers.
