DescriptionLauded for his commercial and editorial work throughout the 1960s, Phillip Leonian was a regular contributor to "Sports Illustrated" magazine. By the time Leonian photographed Muhammad Ali in 1968, the boxer had achieved multiple career-defining successes in the ring and had also become widely recognized for his political activism. This portrait is an outtake from the session that produced the cover image for the May 1969 issue of "Sports Illustrated," presenting Ali with a less confrontational gaze and a partially exposed chest.
