On October 21, 1983, three friends—all brilliant figures in the early 1980s downtown New York art scene —collaborated on a unique project: the artist Keith Haring painted the body of the dancer and choreographer Bill T. Jones; Jones danced and struck Haring-esque poses; and Tseng Kwong Chi photographed him. The result was a series of graphically powerful, entrancing, beautiful photographs, evocative of that exuberant moment of gay life and artistic practice on the cusp of the AIDS crisis. Sadly, Jones is the only one of the three that survived the AIDS epidemic; both Tseng and Haring died in 1990.
