ProvenanceAcquired by Spencer Compton, Northampton, England, by 1851 and remained with the family by descent until 1980 [1]; [Christie’s, London, July 2, 1980, lot 64]. [Phoenix Ancient Art, New York/Geneva, May 17, 2004] [2]; purchased from the previous by Frances Marzio, Houston, June 2004-2024 [3]; by bequest, MFAH, 2024.

[1] Spencer Compton (1790-1851), 2nd Marquess of Northampton, formed his collection primarily between 1820-1830 while living in Italy, but continued to acquire until around 1841. The kyathos was included in the 1979 publication of the collection at Castle Ashby (the family home).
[2] Invoice from Phoenix Ancient Art sent May 17, 2004 (Object File).
[3] Offered by the estate of Frances Marzio (1947-2022) to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in 2023.

This object has a white rectangular label with a barcode on the underside of the base. Under the barcode reads: “BLF.KIA.004.” Based on seeing this type of label on another object from Phoenix Ancient Art, it appears to be their inventory number and labeling system. An additional mark on the object is actually incised sgraffito, added after firing: a Roman numeral X with top and base bars included.
