[1] Previously in the collection of Jacques Denier (1926-1992), per the Sotheby’s auction catalogue. Sold in a group only noted as “Other Properties” with no further details. The vase must have been acquired before his death in 1992 and other vases from Denier’s collection are included in Beazley’s volumes, having been acquired by 1970 or earlier in London and in Paris. This vase is unattributed and would not be included in Beazley’s publications. A phone conversation with the auction house (notes in Object File) confirmed it was part of this collection and that photographs of the collection in Denier's home are known.
[2] Confirmed with the auction house that the object sold at that time.
[3] Invoice dates to July 15, 2004 (Object File).
[4] Offered by the estate of Frances Marzio (1947-2022) to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in 2023.
Inscriptions, Signatures and Marks
On the underside of the foot is a rectangular sticker with an elaborate blue frame and a pre-printed No.________ in blue. Below that line is a mostly illegible handwritten mark that may have had an inventory number or similar.
