As photography became increasingly widespread in the 1840s and 1850s, its intersection with other fine arts became more complex. Daguerreotypes were fitted into the type of case previously used for painted miniatures, for instance, and some miniaturists transitioned to the task of hand-tinting photographic portraits. In this paper-print example, a painted studio backdrop mimics the type of aristocratic garden setting that might have appeared in a traditional portrait painting, and the entire photograph has been made more lifelike through the addition of watercolor.
