DescriptionSafavid architecture features pious, political, and poetic epigraphy in both Arabic and Persian. This wood panel is carved with an Arabic
inscription venerating God: “God the glorious and magnificent, praise God, may his power be eternal and his power be ever increased.”
The panel likely formed part of a larger wooden surface bearing additional inscriptions or abstract motifs, and may have been from
a cenotaph or part of an architectural element such as a door frame or wall frieze. Though the inscription is religious, the panel could also
have been from a secular structure such as a palace.
ProvenanceNasrin and Abolala Soudavar, Houston; given to MFAH, 2022.
