Lebohang Kganye’s series Tell Tale was inspired by her visit to the Owl House in Nieu Bethesda, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Created by outsider artist Helen Martins, the house and surrounding land are elaborately decorated with handmade statues. Kganye’s pictures grow from the elaborate stories she heard about Martens, including this scene about Helen’s father who, after being caught grazing his goats on another farmer’s land, refused to go before the magistrate and had to be carted to court in a wheelbarrow.
