Working across different media, Gabriel Orozco is known for his use of everyday materials to explore relationships—the relationships of everyday objects to one another and the relationship of the natural world to human beings. In Tree through Leaves, a dark tree trunk is visible through a patterned screen, which replicates the natural form of a leaf. This contrast between the “real” and the “artificial” reveals the ways in which humans attempt to create order and perfection from nature, which is in truth wild and perfectly unruly.
