Polished Aluminum monumentalizes a lineup of gleaming medals emblazoned with a star and the national motto “Patria o Muerte” (Fatherland or Death), first proclaimed by Castro in a speech at the same event where Korda photographed Che Guevara. On closer examination, the medals are seen to be nearly worthless one-cent coins. (Admittedly, U.S. currency sporting “In God We Trust” may be no less incon- gruous a juxtaposition between the material and spiritual realms.)
