In the wake of the seemingly contradictory condi- tions of great deprivation and a loosening of social and economic policies during the Special Period, Cirenaica Moreira embarked on a series titled Metálica (Metallic), taking its name from one of the Spanish terms for money. Questioning the shifting values in 1990s Havana, Moreira created wearable structures of metal wires, rivets, milk cans, cookie tins, spoons, and all sorts of everyday utensils for this series. The fragmented body is her own. La Industrial takes its title from a commercial laundry that thrived in pre- revolutionary Cuba and whose weathered sign still hung in Reina Street at that time.
